SAY HE STOLE TON OF BOOTYIBurglar Claims He WasWounded at Vera Cruz iRichard Shelburn, a young colored man found guilty of breaking and entering by a jury In the Superior Criminal Court yesterday, when brought before Judge Brown for sentence claimed that be had served in the United States navy and w^as wounded In the legs by a Mexican bullet at Vera Cruz during the capture of that city over a year ago.Sentence was postponed until today or Friday so that Sheiburn’s record in Uncle Sam’s navy can be looked up by the district attorney’s office. If what lie claims is found to be true Shelburn may receive a lighter sentence than he otherwise would.Shelburn was found guilty on all three counts of the indictment found against him by the grand Jury. While not a stalwart looking man Shelburn must have been a man of muscle if he carried, away without help all the articles he is accused of stealing from the houses he entered.On the night of June 22 he is alleged to have broken into the house ofSamuel Shapiro at the West End andto have taken away with him 1500pounds of rubber worth 10 cents a pound; 400 pounds of lead wor’h 5 cents a pound; 100 pounds of brass worth 12 cents a pound, all the property of Bessie Shapiro.Next day. June 23, Shelburn is said to have to jken Into Esta Einsky’shouse, also ut the West End, and stealing therefrom one graphophone, worth $20; one graphophone horn, $5; a liaih-mer, 50 cents; a necktie, 25 cents; 24 handkerchiefs, 10 cents each; a woman’s skirt, $1, and 20 pounds of sugar, valuedat 5 cents a pound.
