JAMAICA. By this arrival we have nine days’ later news from this island, the dates extending to the 25th of March. The close of the legislative session had been suc ceeded by a lull of political excitement. The cultivation of cotton was occupying much of the attention of the public and press of Jamaica. A number of persons, encouraged by the prospect of remunerating prices in the home market, had com menced planting on a limited scale, and the desire for culti cotton was extending over the island. The Earl of Dundonald, admiral on the station, had visited Port Royal and Kingston. A congratu latory address was presented to his lordship by the mayor and merchants of Kingston. His lordship entered rather fully into the subject, coinciding with the views of the parties signing the address, as to the supe rior advantages possessed by Jamaica over St. Thomas, as a main station, and promised to exert himself further in the matter. His lord ship also took occasion to allude to the low port charges at Saint Thomas, to which he attributed the commercial prosperity of that island, and hinted the propriety of Jamaica following the example. His lordship left on the 22d, for Bermudas. The papers mention the death of Mr. Andrew Gregory Johnston, late member of Assembly. General Santa Anna, ex-President of Masses, after a residence of 18 months in Kingston, had left, with his wife and daughter, for Carthagena, on The weather during the previous fortnight had been very dry. The island generally was healthy.
