WIND SI TTERAS TO JACKSONVILLE east and northeast winds except y northery near coast over south fon, possibly strong at times in squalls: Weather overcast to ht and Thursday with showers and At Least Half Dozen Tar Heels Known To Have Po litical Aspirations Play Leading Role At Dedication (Enterprise Bureau, Sir Walter Hotel) RALEIGH, Aug. 4—— Yester day’s motorcade and celebration down about Goldsboro, Clinton and way stations was billed as a “Cotton Road celebration, but the thunder of oratory sounded to many like the booming of big guns along the political front. There were listed on the pro gram seven “Addresses” and at least six of them were made by North Carolinians known to have had in the past political ambi tions. The seventh might be termed non-political in its impli cations only so far as North Carolina is concerned. It was delivered by Burnett H. May bank, mayor of Charleston, and Hizzoner’s remarks were doubt less relayed to the faithful in South Carolina's biggest city. The half dozen Tar Heels who appeared on the program with suspected political intentions were Congressman Graham A. Barden, State Treasurer Charles M. Johnson, Secretary of State Thad Eure, former state Senator Rivers D. Johnson, everwhile American Legion National Com mander Henry L. Stevens, I Jr., Commissioner of Agriculture Kerr Scott, Judge Henry A. Grady. In addition there was, of course, Governor Clyde R. Hoey, but his appearance could be at tributed more to his official po sition than to any aspirations to future greatness. Mr. Barden, naturally, neglect ed no chance to look out for his fences, the ceremonies being staged in his home district. Rumors that young Charles Aber nathy is likely to oppose him next year have been too loud to be ignored. Mr. Barden, there fore, was not unwilling to appear before so many of his constitu ents. Mr. Johnson is generally cred ited with being a candidate for the gubernatorial nomination in 1940. He aspires, so ‘tis said, to the so-called ‘administration’ support. He is assured of a big nucleus of state employe votes by reason of his strong stand during the 1937 legislature for “ayment to the employes of the rack salaries withheld from them n depression days. Young Mr. Eyre, the handsome newcomer to state politics who upset Stacy Wade last year, hasn't said he intends to run for anything, but most politicians are always planning something of the sort, and «oo it is not stretching much to imagine him as a possi bility for further political ad vancement. Viewing the future with a long range outlook, there are those who see him as a pros pective gubernatorial candidate about ten years from now. Senator Rivers may not have any definite political goal at the present time—certainly he has not indicated that he has——but it is generally thought that he will active in his accustomed area. Some would-be prophets have called this Cotton Road celebra tion the spot chosen by Henry Stevens for a trial balloon ascen sion. These crystal gazers see him in the role of the “Veter ans’ Candidate” for governor. The Warsaw lawyer emerged from a comparatively long period of political obscurity last year to give Sandy the benefit of his solden tongued oratory. Mr. Scott, storm center of con troversy for his alleged ‘‘spoils man attitude after becoming commissioner of agriculture, has 40 announced objective, but can be expected at least to be anxious to have a second term. Judge Grady was mentioned as a possibility for one of the supreme court vacancies recently filled. Being a judge he quite properly has done no overt act politically, but many believe he has hopes. All in all, it was a real bar rage of words with political in tent.
