SAUGATUCK — Harold G. Whipple, 76, of 320 Mason St., died in Community Hospital this morning after an extended ill ness. He was born in Buffalo and moved to Saugatuck at the age of 11. He was graduated from Saugatuck High School and served with the U.S. Army dur ing World War I in the 23rd Engineer Division. He owned and operated Whipples Grocery in Saugatuck until 1962 when ill health forced him to retire. His wife, Leah, died in 1970. Mr. Whipple was an honorary member of the Saugatuck Fire Department, a member of the American Legion, Bruhner Frehse Post, Dutcher Masonic Lodge, Douglas and Saugatuck Police Department. Survivors include a son, Har old (Bud) Whipple of Caledonia; four daughters, Mrs. Eugene (Alice) Lundgren and Mrs. Ray mond (Dee) Smith of Sauga tuck; Mrs. Irving (Ruth) Persh ing of Denton, Texas and Mrs. John (Harriet) McDermott of Oak Creek, Wis.; 12 grandchil dren; three great-grandchil dren; a sister, Mrs. Roscoe (Julia) Funk of Saugatuck; nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Dyk stra Saugatuck Chapel with the Very Rev. Verne Hohl and the Rev. John McDermott officiat ing. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Saugatuck. Friends may meet the family Friday at the family home, 320 Mason St.
