By NATALIA HASSELL The McAllen Memorial Library has on display Mayan, Aztec, Haustec Indian Artifacts and Wood Sculpture from the collection of Mr. Charles T. Hollon of McAllen, Texas. Mr Hollon is from the deep piney woods of East Texas where his father owned saw mills and, according to him, has ‘saw dust and turpentine” in his blood. The sculpture includes pieces by Paul Fujimoto, Hawaii's famous wood sculptor. Mr. Fujimoto uses Milo Wood - a very hard wood preserved by complete immersion in water. His other mediums are black coral and stone. Included in the sculpture are pieces by artisans living in the Huasteca and Aztec Indian settlements in Mexico. The woods used are ‘Quebrache’ (axe breaker), “Palo Escrito” (Writing Wood) “Cedro” (a Mexican cedar) and Ebony. Our knowledge of an cient Mexico and Central America first came to us through Spain. The work of a handful of thoughtful inquirers followed by the increasing in terest of scholars, revealed step by step the true face of a civilization which looked back on the fifth century B. C. The culture grew from the people's belief in simple things - the maize which provided their basic food, the bright stones the invaders were to covet, the sun and the rain. Mr. Hollon, with the help of his friend Professor Gelasio Marquez Perez, Catalogued his collection. Professor Perez has written several books and is a recognized authority on the Aztec, Mayan, Huastec and other Indians of Mexico. On display are artifacts and idols ranging from the Pre-Classic Epoch 200 to 700 B. C. through the Post Classic Epoch 90 to 1168 A. D. An exact replica of a 400 - year - old drum still being used by an Aztec settlement near Huichehuayan S. L. P. Mexico. Pictures of an Aztec wedding performed by a Curandero according to an cient tradition at Tesquitote, S.L.P. Mexico. The copies of the Aztec Codices, picturing the helioglyphs of the Ancient Gods and legends were obtained from copies made from the originals. The originals were removed from Mexico by the Spaniards in the 1a hundreds and are now to be found in Liverpool, England. They were a gift from Dr. and Mrs. Dale, missionaries at Tamazunchale, S.L.P.
