Chicagoan Outclassed by Mayer of Philadelphia in Amateur Cue Tourney. PHILADELPHIA, March 1.—Joseph Mayer, representing Philadelphia in the national amateur 18-2 billiard tournament, opened the big battle to night with a decisive victory over Robert M. Lord, the little lame player from Chicago, by the score of 400 to 249. Mayer played in real champion ship form and it seemed as though he could have made the score more one sided had he not been a bit careless at times. He usually missed on com paratively easy shots. His well exe cuted rail nurse and grand bank shots served to put together runs of 78, 73, 38, 35, 31 and 27, which completely overshadowed Lord, whose best ef forts were confined to a 47, 36, 33 and 30. Mayer averaged 19 1-21. He would have made it a 20 had he not missed a difficult masse in the twentieth in ning. Lord did not seem to be able to gauge the speed of the table until the game was well advanced and he was hopelessly beaten. His shots were too hard, which left him in dif ficult positions, and he frequently se lected the wrong shot.
