The candidates mentioned in the Sunday Journal-Herald who pledge themselves if elected to the city commission to serve as real representatives of the people and not act as tools for special interests, have all been residents of the city for many years. They all have good records and in no way can be considered types of men who look upon taxpayers as legitimate rey for their friends and their friends’ interests. T. L. McSpadden has lived in Albuquer que for many years, has a business record which is unassailable and is an active church worker and good clean citizen. He has never been active in politics, but always has been a booster for the city, though never thrusting himself forward into the limelight. His honesty and known charac ter recommends him as a safe candidate. He is a Democrat. S. S. Gilbert has a record as city council man. That record is good. He is progress ive, but not to the extreme, and knows the city as well as any candidate. His experi ence in city affairs will make him a valuable man on the city board. He is now in the grocery business and is a capable business man. Mr. Gilbert is a Democrat. John Baron Burg, a Republican, has in curred the enmity of the special interests by his almost lone fight against the electric light franchise granted by the city commis sion four years before the old franchise ex pired. He opposed the granting of the franchise and when defeated in this began a fight in the courts which has been carried to the supreme court where it is now pend ing. He has stood the entire expense of this fight. He has had no other interest in this fight than that of attempting to se cure cheaper electric light rates for Albu querque. That explains the opposition to him in some quarters. But Mr. Burg has more than this to recommend him. He is a big property owner and a town builder. He has built at least 150 homes here. He is progressive, though he does not believe in progress at unnecessary expense to the taxpayer. George Taylor, a lawyer, and Democrat, has been a resident of Albuquerque for many years. He has been active in Demo cratic politics though never holding an elective office. He usually takes an inde pendent course in the party. He is not associated with any ring or clique and for that reason his candidacy should appeal to the voter. He was the first to announce
