Welch Magnate Still Has Hopes of Buying West Virginia Coal evidence of the fact that negotia tins in the New River coal deal are not yet dead, is ointed out in a vis it to this country a third time of D. A. Thomas, the Welch coal magnate, who landed in New York Saturday, according to news dispatches. He is stopping at Hotel Belmont, and is said to be here for the purpose of furthering his investigations of the West Virginia coal lands. The dispatch continues: “Mr. Thomas does not deny that he intends to purchase coal lands in west Virginia. His company, which is the largest in England, wishes to obtain properties from which it can supply its South American custom er with greater facility, and Mr. Tomas states that West Virginia mites will serve their purpose well. He will leave shortly for the Moun tain state.”
