Auburn, N. Y., May 19. (®)—“Cat Eye Annie’—Lillian McDowell,—no torious burglar and one of the most elusive characters of the underworld, escaped from the Auburn women’s prison today just three weeks after declining to try for freedom with two other inmates, who were captur ed. Cat Eye, who got her nickname from a peculiar cast in one eye, sawed through the wood around the lock in her cell door before 5:30 o’clock this morning, and got over the walls leaving prison officials ex tremely puzzled. Only a few days ago she told Warden Frank L. Heacox that Sally Joyce Richards, blonde bandit of Buf falo, and Amelia Bascom, badger girl of Brooklyn, tried to get her to join them in their frustrated flight on April 28. Mystified at the time by this revelation prison officials today saw in her refusal at that time a desire to play lone golf. At the prison Cat Eye was consid ered a sort of female Houdini. Warden Heacox said this morning that “it was almost humanly impos sible for anyone to scale the wall because there was a man at the front gate and at every wall corner, and searchlights played upon the entire enclosure.”
