The nuclear power generat ing plant row under construc tion at Dardanelle was explain ed to the Camden Lions Club Wednesday noon, by Tom Oliver of El Dorado, industrial sales engineer for APL Co. He used a colored slide presentation to detail the workings and safety of this new unit. This Arkansas Power Light Co. plant is first for the Southwest. The unit which is Arkansas Nuclear One is due to be com pleted in 1973 and will cost about $100 million. Number Two which will also be at Dardanel le is due to start next year and will be completed in 1975. It will cost about $180 million. Number One Plant will employ 61 people and the second unit unit will need only 30 more em ployes and for that reason, the ‘second unit was planned near’ i the first one. _ Number One plant will gen erate 950,000 kilowatts of pow er. Mr. Oliver gave main rea sons for nuclear powered gen erating plant was fuel problems for common place fuels such as coal, gas and fuel oil. So power company officials turned to nuclear power as the cheap est way to fuel such a plant. Five reasons were given for picking the Dardanelle site near new Lake Dardanelle: (1) Ample water. (2) River naviga tion (Arkansas River.) (3) Bed rock foundation. (4) Easy ac cessability to high voltage lines. (5) Land price reasonable. Safety record was explained fully following scientific tests and Mr. Oliver said there was no danger from radiation, or waste water and that after care ful study research scientists forecast no harmful effects.
