CHEMICAL TRUCK ANSWERING CALL TO UNION STATION CRASHES INTO OBSTRUCTION WHEN TIRE BLOWS OUT. Four firemen narrowly escaped in jury and a chemical truck from Cen tral fire station at Second and Joplin streets Was put out of commission temporarily at 10:30 o'clock this morning, when the big machine crashed into a telephone pole at Broadway and Main streets while on its way to a fire at the Union depot roundhouse, George Hays, driver, was turning into Broadway about twenty miles an hour when a tire on a rear wheel blew out. The car swerved, and Hays threw on the emergency brake. He was unable to stop the heavy appar atus before it crashed into the curb ing and hit the pole. The car ca reened dangerously, nearly turning over. John Campbell, city electrician and fireman, and Firemen Harry Rolley and John Newman were on the ma chine. A headlight was shattered, the rad iator broken and the engine damaged by the force of the collision. The fire was extinguished by other firemen before material damage was done.
