ROUSES POINT, N. Y. (4) — Al though Fort Montgomery was sold at auction on Sept. 18, 1926, the town has been unable to collect taxes on the property, because the title apparently remains with the United States government, but it hopes to do so soon. The War Department explained that the highest bidder at the sale was George S. Fox, of the Fox Film company, but that Fox assigned all his right, title and interest in the bid to the Fort Montgomery De velopment company. A contract was made between the United States government and the Fort Montgomery Development company which provided, among other things, that the title to the property remain with the govern ment until payment of the full pur chase price. Under the terms of the contract, as amended, the final installment on the purchase price is due, and when it is paid the town hopes taxes on the property will be paid. All federal property is exempt from state, county and municipal taxes.
