1956 Bruins baseball: Coach Harold Gafney’s first Bruins squad won their first 12 games of the season along the way to a 17-4 Campaign. Team members included Paul Perona, Lee Kiel, Ed Monaghan, Denny Ryan, Gordon Moran, Dave Marshall, Art Patarozzi, Gene Lesniak, Ed Tallon, John Witzeman, Jim Mini, Tom Cleary, Gerry Novreske, Al Herrmann, Gary Carey, Rich Benkendorf, Mike Korter, Boyd McLean, Allan Gorgal, Dick Peoples and Charles McManus. Larry Novreske and Ed Pfeffer were manag ers for the team. 1974-75 Bruins basketball: One of the best teams in academy history, the 1974- 75 Bruins finished with a 19-8 season, losing to Buda Western in a heart-breaking, last-second 54-53 loss in the regional finals in Hull's new Red Devil Gymnasium. Team members included William Flaherty, James Corpus, David Barra, Tom Lucas, Bradley Baznik, Tom Ptak, James Hudziak, Kevin McClellan, Gary Gahan, Michael Muilenburg, Joseph Donarski, Vince Brolley, Raymond Renkosik, Kenneth Bayne and Larry Albani. Lee Andreoni (1960): Described in the SBA year book as an “active sports man,” Andreoni played four years of football and ran track for two. Upon returning home from the Army, Andre oni followed Bruins athletics passionately. He has con tinued his support through his affiliation with the Bedan Club, known for his work in the pork chop tent. Michael Andreoni (2002): Andreoni was easily one of the most exciting athletes to watch from the Class of 2002 on both the gridiron and the hardwood. He was the quar terback and a defensive back on the greatest football team in recent St. Bede history in the fall of 2001, advancing to the state semifinals. In basketball, Andreoni was the Bruins’ MVP and First Team All-Conference in the Tri-County as a senior in 2001-02. He was a finalist for the BCR Athlete of the Year. Newly married, Andreoni teaches at Spring Valley JFK. Michael Padilla (2002): Another stalwart of the 2001 Bruin semifinalist football team, Padilla was named as the team’s MVP Defensive Back and as the BCR’s Play er of the Year. The 2A Shri ner All-Stater is the Bruins all-time leader for solo tackles in a season with 171. He also excelled in tennis as a two time MVP for the Bruins. He is a sergeant for the Oglesby Police Department. Nicholas Potthoff (1996): It was no accident that Pot thoff excelled for the Bruins golf team growing up on his family’s golf course at Spring Creek. He was the Bruins’ MVP all four years in school, winning the sectional cham pionship his junior season on the way to placing 23rd at state. He also navigated his way around the basketball court, playing varsity ball for three years. The Bruins 1995- 96 MVP owns the school record for rebounds in a sea son with 308, averaging 11.0 per game. Sons Blake and Tyler graduated from SBA in 2012 with three more children in line to the future Bruins. Alec Schwab (2011): The two-time Bruins’ MVP is ranked third in all-time scor ing for St. Bede basketball with 1,377 points. He also excelled in baseball, named as the Bruins’ co-MVP. He was the BCR’s co-Athlete of the Year for 2010-11. He went on to play basketball for IVCC and William Penn, named as the latter’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2015. Larry Novreske and Ed Pfeffer were managers for the team. He resides in the Chicago area doing inside sales for a benefits software company, Jellyvision. Dr. Goodwin Toradson (1940): A member of the Bruins boxing team and a talented musician, the 1940 SBA graduate would give back to his alma mater for years. Dr. Toradson, who will be inducted posthumously, was the doctor “on call” for St. Bede Athletics and St. Bede Abbey from 1956-80. Nine of Dr. Toraason’s 13 children attended the acad emy.
