Burglars last night struck at seven places in Paines ville and caused a fire dur ing a safecracking attempt at one of them, the School Board office. Police said thieves were apparently scared off at the board offices at Jefferson and W. Jackson streets and left behind a lighted acety lene torch they were using in an attempt to open a safe. It started a floor fire. Moderate fire damage was reported along with heavy smoke damage to the three offices. Police Chief George C. Gasper said the torch ap parently was stolen from an earlier burglary last night at B. J. Texaco, Rich mond and Erie streets. The other breakins were at Gordon's Fleetwing Serv ice, 642 Mentor Ave.; Gabr iel Buick used car lot build ing, 85 N. St. Clair St., Mor ley Library, 184 Phelps St., and the Dahling Ridg., 240 Main St. Gasper said Lake County deputy sheriffs investigated a break in of the Courthouse. Items were stolen from the snack bar. Police have not yet compiled a financial es timaet of stolen articles, Gasper said.
