One indication of the decline in farming in Halton County came to light this week. Halton Agricultural Society, sponsors of Milton Fair, didn’t get enough entries in their field crop competition in oats to run a contest — “and that’s the first time in over 30 years,” reports fair board secretary Mrs. G. E. Readhead. She said there were just three entries this year, and the sponsors need at least 10 entries to make a contest. Several farmers have switched to growing barley, she noted, but the lack of entries is certainly indicative of the growing speculation on Halton’s farmlands. Mrs. Readhead named several ‘‘perennial”’ competitors in the oats contest who have recently sold their farms and quit planting crops. The fair board ran a contest in ensilage corn this year, with just 10 entries, and here again several of the farms which compete annually have been sold and didn’t enter the contest.
